Position Overview

The Registered Nurse Consultant (RNC) will provide intermittent skilled nursing consulting services to the Virginia Birth-Related Neurological Injury Compensation Program (Program), communicate regarding admitted claimants’ progress, and will advise Program staff concerning the provision of personal care for admitted claimants of the Program. The RNC aids in guiding individuals and families experiencing various Birth-Related issues by assessing needs, establishing goals, monitoring, and maintaining admitted claimants to their maximum level of functioning. The RNC will report to the Case Manager, maintaining a constructive and progressive relationship with families and support workers. The position maintains good rapport and communications while partnering with the Program’s team members. The position is Exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide a meaningful “core” service for each claimant admitted into the Program based on need and acuity level to ensure all care plan goals are addressed to the satisfaction of the claimants served within the parameters established by the Birth-Related Neurological Injury Compensation Act and the Program’s Regulations and/or Guidelines.
  • Using a person-centered approach, complete comprehensive assessments during wellness checks and site visits within the Commonwealth of Virginia. As a mandated reporter, ensure the safety and well-being of the child during these visits and report any suspicions of child abuse or neglect to the local Department of Social Services. Assess and evaluate patient needs/problems, identifies mutually agreed upon goals with patients and families.
  • Report patient statuses to clinical leadership and attending physicians, as needed.
  • Review medical forms and nursing orders for accuracy in a timely manner.
  • Update care plans on an ongoing basis; revise and resolve patient problems and goals as changes occur and/or recertification becomes necessary.
  • Be responsible for ensuring Age-Friendly Care.
  • Promotes patient health and independence through teaching and appropriate rehabilitative measures, assisting patients in learning appropriate self-care techniques.
  • Facilitate team conferences and coordinate all treatment plan modifications.
  • Complete case management addendums and all required documentation.
  • Maintain knowledge of regulations/standards, Program policies/procedures, and Program operations.
  • Make appropriate/timely referrals with documentation to providers/physicians.
  • Participate in utilization review process: data collection, trend review, and resolution actions.
  • Assist Program staff upon request in obtaining qualified experts/referrals for evaluations and/or site visits which may need to be conducted outside the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Serve as a witness in litigation if necessary.
  • Maintain confidential information and medical records in compliance with privacy, confidentiality, and HIPAA requirements.
  • Travel to various claimant locations or designated assessment centers to conduct evaluations.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years’ experience as a Registered Nurse, with clinical experience preferred.
  • Must be a Registered Nurse licensed in the Commonwealth of VA.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license, a good driving record, and reliable transportation.
  • Must exhibit and have proven ability to make sound nursing judgments.
  • Ability to assess patient needs and formulate individualized patient care plans to meet those needs.
  • Must be qualified to independently complete medical assessments.
  • Current CPR Certification.
